The armaments commission of the League of Nations adopted the principle that the manufacture of arms and munitions should be under Government control. It appointed a subcommittee to approach Governments on the subject. IMPERIAL PREFERENCE. LONDON, Feb. 17. In the House of Commons, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr Walter Guinness), replying to a question, said the Government adhered to the resolution of the Imperial Conference of 1923 with regard to Imperial preference in public contracts. RUSSIA NOT RECOGNISED. WASHINGTON, Feb. 17. The departure of Mr C. E. Hughes (Secretary of State) from the Cabinet on March 4 forecasts no change in America’s policy of the non-recognition of Russia, according to a statement made by President Coolidge to-day. This set’s at rest widespread reports of ah impending change. INDIAN POLITICS. DELHT, Eeh. 18. The Swarajists in the Bengal Legislative Council received a setback, the House voting for the inclusion in the Budget of provision for-the salaries of Ministers in charge of transferred departments, which Swarajist obstructionists previously rejected. The Government victory is due to securing the support of a number of so-called independent Nationalists who previously supported the Swarajist policy. ROTORSHTP TN BAD WEATHER. LONDON, Feb. 18. The rotorahip invented hv the German. Flettner, has arrived in the Firth of Forth from the Elbe. The vessel experienced had weather throughout the journev of 460 miles, and it was necessary frequently to revert to the Diesel engine. The Daily Telegraph considers that the vessel would have made a similar passage with an old canvas rig and an auxiliary engine.
