■ 4 AUSTRALIANS AT PHATATUA. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONPATTIATUA, .Feb. IS. At (lie athletics meeting; to-day the racing was spoilt by a continuous lieree gale. The ' handicaps generally proved Too much lor the visiting Australians, six of whom competed. Parker ami Grehan also competed in the .100 yards, and were not placed. The final of the two. miles was a great race. Rose (Masterton) heating Hyde from scratch, in a strong finish by a few yards. The half-mile was won by Whyte in a close finish. It was a fine race. Rose retired half-way in the mile. Hyde continued, but was unplaced. In the 100 yards invitation race. Whyte, the only Australian competitor, ran- a splendid third from scratch. The -140 yards Wairarapa championship was a fiasco, T. \ angioni (MasterIon) being the only competitor, but he completed the course.The cycle events proved a gift to P. Casey, the youthful Palmertson North competitor, who annexed the one, two and three miles in great style. In the latter event lie heat Burness decisively off scratch. The Australian’s machine was too high geared for the conditions.
