SPORTING NOTES

(By Occasional)

The Wan gan n i meeting to-inorrow, coming after the Egniont and Taranaki meetings, with, so many horses engaged that have taken the field during the past fortnight, will be a. very interesting meeting tor the sporting public of this coast. Hie fact that fresh horses will be engaged lends additional interest. Taking the races in tlreir order, fourteen have accepted in tlie Maiden, and on form Dal Eaton should give a good account of himself, though Luarne may prove too good for him. Xastori will no doubt have a following. Nine horses are carded for the Stewards. Avola and Pelham appeal as likely to he among the leaders at the end of the journey, and the chances of Imperial Spark should not be disregarded. In the Hurdles there are ten acceptors, and a win is due for Equitable. who. if in the mood, should be capable of holding the top weights. Passin’ Through, who is a cut above the rest of the field, may not be quite ready. Wench has been so consistent that he cannot be counted out. i On tbs card, the Welter should show the largest field of the day, sixteen horses being accepted for. Betting will take a wide range here. Uralla, Wilderness and Eil.lette should all run well, and the distance may lie a little far for Mountain Bell.

For the Cup nine horses have remained in, and there should he n great race for the thousand pound stakes. The state of ihe ground will have to lie considered in weighing the chances of the runners. ft the ground is firm, .Stork, which has been showing consistency. will probably he the public fancy. He is in the top of his form, iind a good run may he expected from him. The same remark applies to .Spooney, which has a very handy weight. Of the remainder Muraehi and Mcskcmon must he considered to have i sin in the decision.

The Juvenile Handicap has filled well, and provided Dal. Eaton started in the Maiden, the previous running of Oration will doubtless.make the New Ply month hoi se a public fancy, with Gold Bov Iso in strong demand.

The Pet re Handicap is another race that, should provide a big field, and the contest between Rafa and Euphonium 'done should ho worth watching without, taking into account the chances of other likelv ones. Ther* "re nine arc:liters for the i-isl race of th'» dav, and Infprno is such a g ,'1 mi lev five bo must lie given a d ,‘haive. Tukia also is a jrood one. and ran no depended upon to make n close race of it. Siaosi among the light weights reads well also, and it looks as though all the starters will have a good Mowing.
