An inquiry into tlie explosion on the auxiliary scow tvaiaia last November opened to-uay. the tacts weie that the vessel, laden with 1250 eases of motor spirit, was anchored oil the wliaif. A. member of the crew filled the riding lamp, and as he struck a liglh a heavy explosion occurred, two holes being blown in the bow and the ship was. set on fire. Mr. Meredith, lor the- superintendent of the Mercantile Marine, said the suggestion was that the explosion was caused by petrol fumes getting from the hold to the) forepealt and some one going there with a. naked light. The circumstances) were such that it was felt the eourt might obtain sufficient evidence to make some genera] suggestion on the carriage of benzine. Captain Stewart, master of the Kaiaia. said eight or ten cases of benzine were rejected because they were leaking. There must have been a leak somewhere, and the fumes got into the forepoß.l: to cause the explosion. David 8011, engineer and surveyor, said, he did not think the bulkheads were reliable in a. wooden ship. There wa« a risk in a wnnAo-n vessel of the bulkhead not remaining: tight during the whole of the certificate. The inquiry was acl ion rued.
