monthly meeting. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board was held in the s-ecre-tary’rs office to-day, when there were present: Messrs. F. W. Gill-anders (chair), J. J. Meldon. A. E. Wills, A. Campbell, J. S. McKay, E. A. Washer, A. La room and E. J. Gifford. DENTAL CLINIC. The establishment of a dental clinic in Hawera was discussed, the chairman stating that lie had noticed that 'reports, in the press led one to understand that the department had practically agreed to the establishment of a clinic in. Hawera. It was stated that the board; was strongly in favour of such an institution being set up in Hawera. NEW HOSPITAL SEWERAGE. The matter of approaching the Borough Council requesting permission to link up the new hospital with the borough sewerage sy,.stem was left to, the chairman and Mr. J. A'. Dulfill.

BOARD AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

Reference was made to the negotiations with the Taranaki. United Friendly Societies' Association relative to the association’s refusal to pay outpatients’ fees. The hoard’s secretary (Mr. C. M. Haggett) said that the association’s' secretary stated that they could not nay, as their rules definitely stated so Mr. Haggett, however, asserted that that was hardily the point. He was satisfied that if a conference could be brought about the association's; representatives could 'be shown how payment by the association, would be of mutual benefit to both bodies. Mr. Campbell said that to bring matters to a head he would move that the hoard sever its connection with the Friendly Societies’ Association. Members, however, considered this course too- drastic, but finally a. motion was pa-sed to the effect that if the Taranaki United Friendly Societies’ Association refused to pay outnatients’ fees, the hoard sever its connection with the societies. MORE! FARM LAND.

The consent of the Minister of Health to the purchase of ten acres of farm land, was placed before the board, and the farm committee’s report showed that negotiations for the purchase of 10 acres adjoining the board’s present farm were being completed. The purchase was being made in order that the area of the board’s farm should not. be decreased by the land now being occupied by the new hospital site. RETORTS. The medical superintendent reported that on December 31 there were 37 remaining in hospital, but during January SO were admitted. During January 69 patients were discharged, three died, and 45 remained in hospital at the end of the month. The daily average cf occupied heels, during January was 42.6 and patient days totalled 1321. The daily average for the ten months; of this hospital year was 51.5, and the daily average for the same period of last year was 46.2. During January 45 operations were carried out. and 40 X-ray cases were lealt with. At the end of the month there were five patients receiving massage treatment.

The acting-matron, Nurse M. Dewar, reported that since stating that Nurses Ldwrie, Slater, Murphy and O’Dowd had been, successful in their final examination, information had mine to hand that Nurse Murphy had passed with, honours. —The board expressed their satisfaction at the success of the Hawera nurses. The matron of the Old Men’s Home (Mrs. M. Laing) reported that there were eight inmates in the home and all hut one were well. The farm manager (Mr. H. J. Webber) reioorted that 463 gallons of milk and 120 pints of cream had been suoplied to the hospital. The reports mere adopted.
