TARANAKI .JOCKEY CLUB

AUTUMN MEET"IN(

SECOND DAY S RESULTS

A beautiful day and a record crowd greeted the Taranaki Club lor > ts 'Second day’s racing on Saturday. Ihe vat ion s races, had been well filled and the public- had plenty of choice, but were not too successful in picking the winners, as only two favourites, came borne during the course of the day. Mr. Coyle did his work very well as handic-apper, while Mr. C. O’Connor, as starter, got his fields .away in great style. .... ■Speculation was very brisk indeed, a total of £32,758 10s passing through the .machines .as compared with £31.448 10s on the same day last year. The total for the meeting was £60.229 10 s as against £-59.795 last year, making an increase of £534 10s. Racing on the whole was very interesting, and some good finishes were witnessed. A very select field went out for the Elleventh Taranaki Stakes, and the public seized upon the two-year-olds as the most likely to. furnish the winner, but Motley, showing something of her form of last year, got into the lead enrlv and ran home in front of Siaosi, which, ran a surprisingly good race. The Paul Memorial Handicap was won by Town Bank, who returned a, parable dividend to his backers. The winner made up a- lot of ground and ran the r.ace in splendid time for the course — viz., 2.7 2-5.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Maecenas.)

The southern trainer who recently priced Te Kawa asked for a two weeks’ option at the price quoted. This was granted. After runiyma three very indifferent races Bonnv Rill, at New Plymouth on Saturday, suddenly the form she displayed at Martoii at New Year, and of course, won easily. One of the fittest animals that raced at the Egmont and Taranaki tneetings

was Mountain Bell, and trainer W. F. Mantle deserves praise for the condition and consistent form. The autumn meeting of the Wanga - nui Jockey Club opens on Thursday next and concludes on Saturday; As a rule the Taranaki province is well represented at the Wanganui meetings, and this week’s fixture is no exception. They may do well, too. Lady Cavendish is still troubled slightly with the cold she caught in the spring of the year. N° doubt this accounted for the inability of the filly to run on in the Taranaki Stakes on Saturday last. . The good races put up' by SiaosL and Shut Eye on the second day of the. Taranaki meeting draws one’s attention to Oration, a two-year-old. .that , beat this pair on the opening day. •- ■.* Nastori was a “bg tip” for the Juvenile Handicap on the second dayat New Plymouth. She was creditably ridden by young Joe Gray, but on the' day was no match for. the pair that, beat her. ‘ - The recent meeting of the Taranaki - Jockey Club was a .most enjoyable one - from every point of- view, and it is - doubtful if this popular body ever had a better meeting. ■ At one stage it looked as if the Tara-., naki Jockey Club would have to delete the classical race (Taranaki Stakes) from their programme, but the good . response this year has given the race a further life. In. this respect a ce.r-:. tain class of owner should support -tlic Prior to the running of .the.TT.aranaki Stakes, Gaillard had been pleasing Ins trainer, but in that event the rider of , Gaillard appeared to be unable-to get. Absurd’s son out of trouble. Gaillard-. will be ridden at Wanganuiby. L. Pine. As it is usual to '‘slate - a boy should lie; ride a poor race;; then m fairness to jockeys good or improving horsemanship should lie .noted, and in_ this respect young L- Pine is entitled to a word of praise, - as the writer has - seen this lntl ipv© excellent cliS" / In Civilfofm., Siaosi, and Wilderness the brood litare Civilisation has P ro " duced three sons all of which show . speed. Fast as Civilforin lias.proved to 'be, the form, of Siaosi, at..the fast lew meetings suggests that he will turn out the best of the.trio. . " Last season, as a two-year-old, Siaosi showed great speed on occasions, but did not prove too reliable,, and it was decided to unsex the finelooking son of Elysian. The move was a successful one, for Siaosi xs now racing most generously. ‘ . The race .track at New Plymouth lias never been in better order than last, week hence the. times were fast on many occasions. In some quarters - these fast times were doubted, but competent private watch-holder s were even inclined to make, the times faster than th Is °Hie I: Taranaki Stakes, Motley put mi her best performance since being twivear-old, f 9 r, teghuimg very smartly the Wauganui-tramed . fillj was always going better than the smart two-year-olds, Lady Cavendish and Gold Acre and in the last fnHong Motley had sufficient in reserve to hold her rivals off. . ~. Surveyor -was not ridden with the best of 'judgment in the Taranaki Cu£> of Thursday last, for, carrying 9 8 the son of Nassau was rushed to the front with a fast run five furlongs from home, with the inevitable result that Surveyor tired over the last half f i Ion o - to he beaten by a- narrow margin into''fourth place. On the strength ot this performance Surveyor was looked on af”oood” for the Paul Memorial bv many” keen judges, but at no stag - es the chestnut horse dangerous. As The Banker is still furnishing, and ,Ims had a fair amount of racmj for a three-year-old, it was decided to forfeit his second day engagement at the Taranaki Jockey Club s meeting. The Banker will also misst he coding meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, but will be specially prepared for t tafdif ■ not ‘show the phenomenal speed . J£h tuition , and time. sWW develop into a "ood stake-earner. Dal Eaton is a remarkably lug' youngster; inf a .. should he still grow much lie may be cumbersome as. a racehorse. _i_
