ADELIE LAND

SUB-AXTARCTTC REGIONS,

FRENCH CLAIMS,

ANNEXATION SUGGESTED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT (Received Fob. 10, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 15.

The French Government recently proclaimed Adelie Land, Kerguelene Land and the Islands of St. Paul and Amsterdam, as sanctuary for seals, penguins and other sub-antarctic fauna. Sir Douglas Mawson, dealing with the subject., expressed the hope that France would abandon the annexation of Adeiie Band in favour of Australia. He claimed that D’Urville, the French explorer, did .tot, go ashore at Adelie Land; he simply sighted it and coasted for two days, whereas the Australasian Antarctic expedition spent three years exploring Adelie Land and other Antarctic lands.

The Daily Mail, commenting on Sir Douglas Mawson’s hope, says that nothing is known Hu London concerning French actions. The Mail adds: “We do not suppose France attaches much importance to the nominal ownership of territory so forbidding, though it is indisputable that D’Urville discovered and annexed Adelie Laud in 1840. The ownership seems to be a matter for friendlv discussion.”
