FAMILIES BURNED ALIVE.
RUSSIAN PEASANT TRAGEDIES The Soviet authorities at Stavronpolsk report six cases of peasant families having, after abandoning hope of receiving wheat to prevent their starvation, assembled all members of the family, fastened the doors and windows, set lire to the house, and perished in the flames. The peasants believe, says the Berlin correspondent of the Daily Alai 1. that the torment of such a death atones for the sin of self-destruction.
Three forward ropes mooring the Wellington harbour ferry steamer Meritai were, severed at 9.30 o’clock last evening while the vessel was berthed at Day’s Bay. i iFortunatoly the ship was prevented from becoming adrift by the after lines to the wharf, which were not interfered with .
