CASE SETTLED.

EXTRA EDITION.

RIGHTS OF AN AUTHOR. AN INTERESTING POTNT. . BY CABLE—PEERS ASSOCIATION—COPYIMOHT , (Received Feb. 14. 11.15 a.m.) ' LONDON, Feb. 13. The settlement of Mr Filson Young’s action was announced in thp Chancery Division. Mr Archer, for the plaintiff, emphasised that the settlement had been reached because Mr Filson Young, while lie wanted to test whether it was right for anyone to incorporate the whole of an article in a book except under very exceptional circumstances, now realised that . the matter might bring into litigation the names of very great public servants, and he was very anxious to avoid the appearance of anything of that sort. Sir Duncan Kerley, for Admiral Bacon, said the new edition of the book was being prepared merely giving extracts from Mr Filson Young's article.—Router.

i f A cable message received on January 21st stated that the vexed question of the Battle of Jutland has cropped up in the law courst. Filson Young brought an action in the Chancery Division to restrain Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon and his publishers, Hutchinson and Co., from publishing any copy of Admiral Bacon’s book on “The Jutland Scandal,-’-’ which plaintiff infringed his copyright. Counsel for the defence asked that the motion should stand over for a few days, owing to Admiral Bacon’s absence from England. Justice Astburv assented. Plaintiff’s counsel said that Filson Young wrote an article in the Sunday newspaper, expressing the opinion that Admiral BA tty’s tactics at Jutland were preferable to Viscount Jellicoe’s. Admiral Bacon reprinted the whole article in -his book with his own comments thereon. Counsel argued that this was an infringement of copyright, and plaintiff had thereby suffered damage, as the value of the article had not expired.]
