MOTOR CAR ACCIDENTS.
JUDGE’S WARNING. MORE CLARE NECESSARY. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 13. Two prisoners, who had been found guilty of manslaughter following upon motor oar accidents, weie brought before Mr. Justice Reid in the Supreme ourt to-dav for sentence. In each case a fine was imposed. His Honor said: “1 wiant it to be recognised that- if these accidents continue and juries find that- persons have been .guilty of negligence, 1 do not think that- a. fine should always be inflicted. t think it will be necessary to take some stronger measures unless more care is shown in the handling ol motor cars on the roads.”
A. fine of £l5O was imposed on Win. Pitman, who was found guilty of manslaughter in respect of the death of Elsie Lilian Roberts, who was knocked clown, in Upper Queen. Street- on November 3.
In the ea.se of George Denton. who was found guilty of negligent Irivin.". caused by inexperience in, handling Ip’cmotor car. therebv causing the death of William Campbell. a tramwnv motorinnn. His Honor imposed a. fine of £SO. 'Flic incident took ulaee on November 29 on the Great, South Road. His Honor said he did-not look on Denton’s c««e as being «s serious P' Pitman’s. The jure, he thought, were ouite right in finding that the accident was due more to inexperience than, to recklessness.
