BOWLING
KAPONGA CLUB. GREEN OPENED FOR PLAY. Beautiful weather conditions favoured the opening of the Kaponga Bowlin" Club’s green, which tqolc place yesterday before a gathering of approximately 200 bowlers and interested spectators. Air O. J. Haw-ken, M.P(patron) made the formal declaration. The enthusiasm of the committee and the work devoted to the preparation of the green was evidenced by its good condition, the general opinion being that it had plaved exceedingly well considering the short space of time that lias elapsed since the grass was before calling on Mr Hawken to declare the green open, the president (Mr A. E. Anderson) extended a hearty welcome to all in attendance, and expressed the pleasure it afforded him to see such a representative gathering of bowlers and their friends. The occasion was a most important one m the me of the club, and the gathering showed that keen interest was being taken in the club by local and district bowlers and residents. On behalf of the club lie had to express appreciation of the work done by certain members in preparing the green for play, and he had to especially tender thanks to Air I. Hardin" for the donation of scoring boards and Mr W. Scanlon for painting them. Mr N. C. Davies for the donation of discs and Mr T. Tattersall for painting the latter. The club also wished to thank neighbouring clubs for courtesies extended, and were indebted particularly to the Manaia Club for the occasions afforded for play on then green. , , . ' Air. Hawken said it afforded him very keen pleasure to be present and note the interest everyone was taking in Kapongn’s new green. He knew that local bowling enthusiasts had worked very hard to institute the e and have the green put down, and they were to be congratulated on their success. He, knew of no more pleasant or fraternal sport than bowling, and he anticipated that the new green would Le the scene of many enjoyable gatherings, more especially as lie understood the ladies’ croquet club contemplated putting down a lawn for plain adjoining the green. The green w’ould .improve during coming seasons, and, favourably situated as it was, Kaponga would doubtless become a great bowling centre. In conclusion, Air-. Hawken said it was liis pleasure and duty to declare the green open for piny, and he hoped that for years to come members would enjoy the club privileges to the fullest extent. Telegrams received from Messrs Amess (Stratford Club) and Bary (Eltham), apologising for absence and wishing the club every success, were read bv the president. At Air. Haw-ken’s request, Airs. Hawken then threw the first jack, after which the green was open for play. . • Members and visitors w-ere the guests at afternoon tea of Airs.
