A CURIOUS REQUEST.
«■ DOWRIES FOR BRIDES ON NEW YEAR’S DAY.
There are lucky brides in. St. Cyrus, Kincardineshire, who receive on New Year’s Day a> dowry of £7 5s 3d iroin what is known as. the Orr Bequest. This year there were four claimants. The founder of this- curious bequest was Mr. John Orr, who at one. time was Fayma^rtei*-Gen-era 1 ol the*'. Forces in Ihdia. and later became t-he proprietor of the estate of Bridgeton. The bequest dates back to 1847.. Under his will Mr. Orr set aside £IOOO, the interest accruing from which he decreed should be divided into five equal portions, for the following purposes: (I) The purchase of tea. and sugar for the poor of the parish, (2) a donation to t'.ie tallest woman belonging to the pari'ih, (3) a. donation to the shortest woman., (4) a donation. ito the oldest woman, and (5) a donation to the youngest girl belonging to thfc parish; who in married in- the" Parish Church within, the year.
