NEW PLYMOUTH I!ALIYS. SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY. STORK WINS CUr. QUEST THE FLYING. Beautiful weather favoured the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, and consequently with an attractive programme of races there was a large attendance of patrons. The track was on the hard side owing to the recent dry spell, but nevertheless it was in excellent order. The totalizator handled £27,5 fO 10s, as against £28,346 10s last year, a decrease of £776. . The arrangements for the gathering were admirable, all the officials working together in a manner which ensured the success of the fixture'. r I he secretary (Mr E. P. AA ebster) had the clerical work well in hand, and the starter (Mr C. O’Connor) got his fields away well. Mr AV. P. Russell as judge hoisted -the numbers promptly and correctly. Throughout the day the racing was of a high order, and finishes generally were close. The Cup race drew an exceptionally good field, and provided a wonderful betting race, there being only a few pounds between the totals of the amounts invested on the first five horses in public favour. The finish, too. was an exceptionally good one, although Stork finally won fairly comfortably. Proceedings were considerably enlivened with, a bright programme of music provided by the First Battalion Taranaki Regimental Band. Details of the racing are as follow : WAITARA HURDLES HANDICAP, of 226 sovs.; second horse to receive 46 sovs and third horse 20 sovs from the stakes. About one mile and three-quarters. 6 Mrs T. The Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting concludes to-morrow, and everything points to a good day’s sport For a considerable time the Masterton Racing Club bad difficulty in selecting a day for their meeting, but eventually settled-on February 14.

Lady ideal ran two good races in strong company at the recent Wellington meeting, and if able to reproduce ibis form at Masterton to-morrow should prove hard to beat. Demand has the name of being unreliable, but in his last few starts he has raced most generously. Demand will bo a runner for the hurdle race at the Taranaki meeting to-morrow and should not lack support. After running a good race to Oration at Egmont, Anthem went lame, but if recovered, and a runner at the. Taranaki meeting to-morrow, this imported filly will run prominently.' The trainef of Town Bank expected the three-year-old to run well in the Cup yesterday, but at no stage did he threaten danger. Pelham was responsible for a great inishing run in the Flying yesterday, and if started to-morrow Pelham is assured of good support. During the week Te Kawa was meed by a prominent southern ownertrainer. The price, asked was £6OO I understand. Te Kawa should he a good proposition for South Island hurdle racing. . Merit is. working well, and many keen judges expect this mare to run well in the Taranaki Stakes to-mor-row. The imported Bing the Bell accompanied Trainer Jamieson’s team to Taranaki. but, unfortunately, developed a leg which kept Ring the Bell from starting yesterday! As the stake money offering for the Stewards’ Handicap enabled a five pounds apprentice allowance to be claimed for M. Gray, the trainer of Pounia wisely decided to take advantage of the . concession offering. If iblc to reproduce Egmont form, Pouma should be hard to heat under such conditions.

After running an. excellent race at Trenjt/haifi, Willow \Y;u went on to the Pahiatua. meeting and defeated, among others. Mountain Bell. As the latter has not run a bad race since, the form suggests that' Willow Wai will be very hard to beat at the Masterton meeting to-morrow.

In hi« three last races in. public Gold Acre lias won, but in these events lie met nothing of the class or performances: of Lady Cavendish, wli.iy.h filly, has uot run a had race in.her career. Since coming south Gold Acre has not galloped well, and for this reason Lady Cavendish should be the public fancy to-morrow in the Stakes,

Before he raced, on Thursday it was claimed jthiati IRiationiai was ..showing something like iiis two ancl' three-year-oldi ispeed, but hisi form sadly dis r proved this. There was, little excuse for the failure of Absurd’s son. as Gray jumped him out particularly well, and over the first three furlongs Ratio, pal was not off the bib he appeared to meet, with some interference at the straight entrance, but over the concluding stages Quest literally sniotheerd him.

When in. the humour Stork is capable of mustering up a, great burst of speed for a finishing run, and- rarely has . one .seen better efforts, over the last couple- of furlongs of distance races than those exhibited: by Stork in .the Fgmont ian.d Taranaki Cups. As the owner of Stork (Mr. Newton King) has done much for racing, particularly in Taranaki, the dual success of Stork was genuinely pleasing to Mpo rbsme n gene na 11 y. O'er the early stages, of the Flying at. the Tarianki meeting yesterday. Quest “tailed off,” but once heads wore turned for home the son of Martian put in a, sensational run, the likes of which, one rarely sees, and by the time the winning post, was recalled Quest was a very comfortable winner. Trainer Sid Reid undoubtedly understands how to train this once, moody gelding. The autumn race meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, March 4 and 5. Nominations for all events close on Tuesday next, 17th hist.
