Another evening sports meeting of the series arranged bv the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club was held last evening. There were no outstanding performances, but Stan Lay was going neil with the javelin, and competition was keen in every event. Results: Two mile cycle race—H. Storming (240yds) 1. W. At Tuedav’s luncheon of tlie Wellington Rotary Club the secretary (Mill. Amos) made reference to the visit of Australian athletes to New Zealand. It was the intention of the New Zealand Amateur Afhlelic Association, he stated, to hold- sports meetings in. eon•neetion willi t heir visit in practically all the chief centres. The aim of the Amateur Athletic Association was to encourage sportsmanship rather than mere “sport”; and as, unfortunately, amateur athletics were in rather a bad wav in New Zealand just now. lie. asked the Wellington Rotary Club to authorise him to write to the Rotary Clubs throughout, the Dominion asking them to support the sports meetings referred to. This was agreed to unanimously and by acclamation. The president (Air D. A. Ewen) said that when the Rotary Club ran its boys’ week-ends in Newtown Park it, had received invaluable assistance from those connected with the Amateur Athletic Association, and the meetings mentioned by Mr Arnos gave Rotarians a welcome opportunity of reciprocating. (Applause.)
