THE NEW CZAR.
WIFE IN AMERICA. The Grand Duchess of Victoria Teodorovna, Queen Victorias granddaughter, and wife of the Grand Duke Cyril, who recently proclaimed himself head of the Romanoffs and Czar of Il'usisia, arrived at New York recently on board the liner Paris.
Fifteen motor-cycle police and defectives of the ‘‘bomb squad” met the ship at the pier owing to reports that Bolsheviks might attempt to assassinate her. The police escorted her to the Waldorf-Astoria, where she occupied the regal suite. Detectives will protect her all the time .sire is. in Amel ica.
She is accompanied by Mine. Makaroff, widow of General Makaroff, and Mme. Orloff, widow of General Orloff, as ladies) in waiting. She brings a magnificent collection of yllomanot! jeewls, including some of the Russian crown jewels. ft is understood that she comes, to raise funds for the anti-Bolshevist cause, but in a. statement ‘■he denied that her visit is connected with politics.. it is. however, stated on good authority that she has received much encouragement to come to America) to collect motions for her husband’s cause.
The Grand Duchess is a daughter of the late Duke of I'M" ' h and a 'leister'of the Queen of .iiir:;>la. She married the Grand Duke of Hesse in 1878. when, she was. seventeen, but obtained a divorce in 1901./ She married the Grand Duke Cyril, cousin of late Czar, in 1905.
