SINGAPORE BASE.
REASON FOR ITS
ESTABLISHMENT
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Feb 9 Mr W. C. Bridgeman <First Lord of the Admiralty), in a speech at Burnley, in emj-hasising the nerd for a base at Singapore, refuted the suggestion that this action might be regarded as likely to cause uneasiness in Japan. “ The Japanese Government, whose friendship we value now as we valued their loyal alliance in the Great War,,” he pointed out, “ were well aware at the time of the Washington convention that the project had long been in our minds. “ Our action has been taken,” he added. “ for the sole purpose of introducing greater economy and efficiency into the movements of our ships in those waters, not from any expectation of an attack from Japan, and still less from any aggressive desires on our part.”
