CROQUET TOURNAMENT.
A FTF/RNOON'S FLAY. MANY CLOSE, MATCHES. IMay was continued all day yesterday, and until close on seven in the case of one or two matches on both lawns, enthusiasm being oi the keenest. A lot of excellent play was seen, and in, quite a number the handicapping was proved by the closeness of the finishes. At Hawera- Club- in, the first round• Mas. Masters (Patea) had a very narrow win oven her dub mate, Airs. Horner, just beating her on. the peg, and. in turn suffered 1 a-like fate against Mrs. Olenny (Patea), a pegged out ball, proving her downfall. Another great struggle took place between Airs. Cowling and Alls. Dowling, the lormet winning on the peg. • In the second round Airs. AJcKav gave Air. Olague a great go, and using her* bisques well, she ran, him right to the last hoop. Two very, hollow victories went to Airs. Myllie. her op-’ ponent failing to make a point and to Alls. ’ Ailed alley. her opponent- scoring only two. Air. Horner, with seven bisques, carried too manv guns for the champion, Mr., Meredith (owe 1), and their meeting in the championship should be a great contest. A- few games were played in tiro third round, two being very close. All's. If. AVyllie had a very keen struggle with Airs. AleGahey, who allowed her two bisques, and near the end both bad pegged one ball and the latter was one hoop ahead of her, opponent. NYitli her other ball she was in a good position, to hoop, hut failed in an easy -hot, and Airs. Wylie getting a long sirot went on to win a very exciting match.
The meeting is being conducted exceedingly well and many favourable comments are made.by visiting players on the completeness of the. arrangements and the smoothness with which everything is going.
