“THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.” The audience which assembled last night to see the first presentation here of the widely. heralded Universal production “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” witnessed a picture as beautiful, as profoundly stirring, as anything ever hoped for. Universal has taken Victor Hugo’s famous novei and converted it into a production that will reach a great many more people and impress them more deeply than the book ever did. It is an indisputably fine achievement. Turning attention to the flesh and blood element in the ensemble, we find that two names stand out bold,y —Lon Chaney, the star, and AYallace Worsl.ey, the director. That great actor, Ernest Torrence, is also present, and does some remarkable work. Every member of the cast deserves praise for his or her excellent work. GRAND THEATRE, TO-NIGHT. “HARBOUR- LIGHTS. ” “Harbour Lights,” the premier attraction at the Grand Theatre to-night, is an adaptation from the well-known melodrama by George R. Sims, and stars Tom Moore. As a pjay “Harbour Light,” scored a great success everywhere. The film version is a true reorocfuetion of the original and is said to enhance some of the most poignant' parts to a greater degree than did the stage version. The Sydney Bulletin J write: “AVilliam Heughan finished up his recitals in. the Town Hall in aj blaze of glory.” The AA’ellington critics_ have been most eulogistic in hispraise. The Dominion writes: “This 1 artist has not only a wonderful voice:' he possesses also an astounding talent, for dramatic acting. One can realise I neither the full beauty not meaning of Scottish song until hearing William Heughan.” He is assisted by Hyman j Lenzer, the brilliant young violinist, and also by Gladys Sawyer, the well i known English pianist.
