Details of the mass executions at Kalgan, a Chinese town, were cabled by the Tientsin correspondent of the Central News.

Because they were not paid or adequately fed troops at Kalgan mutinied, and for days the town was given up to looting.

On a promise of back pay, the men went back to the barracks, but 800 of them were there disarmed, packed into railway trains, and taken out to the open country for execution. They were locked in the; carriages by a strong body of the Governor’s troopswho had not taken part in the muitin.y The spot chosen for the executions was the edge ot a ravine. The rtifjn, in batches of five, were forced to kneel, and after they had been shot, their bodies dropped into the water beloiv. One soldier feigned death, fell: backwards and then swam for his life. The executions were witnessed by a crowd cf thousands, many of them foreigners. The Governor, in justification of these extreme measures, states that previous Governors and commanders have been too lenient with revolting troops.
