ALLEGED BOOKMAKING.

(.1) that on January 19 he used certain premises- in Trafalgar Street, known a« a. fruit and confectionery shop, as a common gaming house, and. (2) that he carried on the occhpation of a bookmaker within the meaning of the Gaming Act. Accused pleaded not guilty to the first charge, and on the second also pleaded not guilty and elected to- be dealt with by a jury. Counsel asked that the summary charge be adjourned pending the hearing of the major charge before a jury. His client would be seriously prejudiced if the hearing of the minor case was taken now. There was also a charge against- accused's father that he wilfully allowed the premises to be used as a common gaining house. There was <a 1 further charge against Maxwell, which would go before a jury. All the cases were inextricably mixed up, and) he asked that all the charges should be adjourned so as to allow a clear case to be heard before a juryThis the Magistrate agreed to do, and the accused' was remanded on the same bail .a,si before.
Charges against William. .T. Moxey, of wilfully allowing his premises to- he used as a common gaming house, against Morris H. Vivian Maxwell of alleged 'bookmaking, and against Dominie Merlino of being, found on a common gaining house. were adjourned. The depositions in the charges to go before the jury will be taken, on Wednesday morning, and the minor charges were adjourned until March f/
