PERSONAL ITEMS.
Sir Archibald and Lady Edmonstone, also Lord and Lady Somerleyton, who are at present in Australia, intend to proceed to Sydney shortly, states a ■Sydney Press Association message. Rotarian T. J. Salmon, of Hawera, joined a party of four members of the Wanganui Rotary Club, who, passed through this morning on thei r way to assist at the opening of the New Plymouth Rotary Glub to-day.
On Saturday afternoon members of the Eltham Croquet' Club gave an afternoon to Mrs. A. E. 'SmaJley, who is leaving for Auckland. The President, Mr. H. G. Carman, on behalf of the members expressed the regret they felt at Mrs. Smalley’s departure. She had been a worker, and was always willing to do what she could for The club. The members wished her every success in Auckland, and as a token* of tHeir esteem presented her with a tortoiseshell toilet tray. Mrs. Smalley suitably responded.
Leonatus, the well-known sporting writer of the Australasian, says of the l.ate Hon. O. Samuel: “For many years he was president of the Taranaki Jockey Club, and for over 20 years one of the outstanding delegates of the New Zealand Racing Conference, the racing law-making body of this Dominion. Both in the local position and at the conference he contributed work of great value to the racing world. As a conference member he assisted in the revision of the Rules of Racing, He was a trustee of the accident fund, and was frequently called upon to act as one of the judges in appeal cases. His' legal knowledge and judicial temperament, together with his unimpeachable integrity, fitted him for the great part he played in the government of racing.”
