ATHLETIC SPORTS.
URES.AIiNG ROGAIB AND BATHS
ANOTHER FORWARD MOVE
r It has been felt for u long time that accommodation ior xootliall teams pfaymg in Hawera. and for athletes in any otner branch of sport was, a pressing need. For years tae subject has been discussed, but recently an active agitation was begun with a view to erection of this much required facility. The result was. an otter by Air Hooker to run an art union on henaii of tne fund. i'ne amount raised is about £250, and further consideration , has been given of late to the question of further augmenting tnis sum and of securing a site for the buildings. The A. and i\ Association offered most generously the use of the big produce shed, but it was .considered that while the new buildings would be better put on the borougn reserve adjoining, the A. and P. building would be suitable for a gymnasium. ' • To advance the project a step further a meeting of all sports bodies, borough councillors and A. and R. Association delegates was held at the Borough Chambers on Saturday night. There was only a fair attendance, Rugger, soccer, boxing, amateur athletics, tennis, and cricket being reiiresented, and Mr A. Gray, was voted to the chair! There were also present': Alessrs J. Goodwin and C. C'ullinan (Rugby), F. Stevens (boxing), W. Adams and A. Alorgan (soccer), E. Yearbury (tennis), F. GiHanders and S. C. Tonks (Egmont A. and P. Association). Apologies were received from Alessrs AlcCarthy and Townsend. . -
Air Hooker said if tl\e Borough Council were approached with the request that the building be put on their reserve he was confident they would assist. He said a definite scheme of action was required in the first instance, and it was essential to form a committee to have, a scheme for providing ways and means. On his'motion it was resolved that all present, including the A., and P. Association delegates, form themselves into a. committee to go into the question of formulating a scheme. After some discussion Air, Hooker agreed to act as lion, secretary, with Air C. C’ullinan as assistant.
In reply to a question Mr Gray said .he considered the A. and ‘P. buildings might be used as a gymnasium. Mr Hooker said the offer from the association was most generous, and he believed the Borough Council would agree to subsidise the amount raised. In order to see what would be required, Mr Morgan agreed to give an, estimate of the probable cost after he had'inspected the New Plymouth buildings. Messrs Adams, Gray, Goodwin, and Tonks were deputed to act with Mr Morgan j . ( The committee will meet after the return of Mr Morgan, and meantime a deputation, consisting of Messrs Gray. Stevens and the hon. secretary, will wait on the Borough Council next Monday to ascertain that body’s opinion with regard to a subsidy. The committee recommended that the borough site be adopted. This was as far as the meeting could go, and they will meet at a later date to be arranged.
