Hnvera ladies deserve much credit for their enterprise in securing the championships of Taranaki, and are looking forward to a great success - next week. The tournament will commence on Tuesday and continue on. the successive days. A large entry has been received. The Hawera Park' lawns will be the scene of much activity. New Zealand championships a southern .critic sa>s,: ■. ■ . • ' Miss Hesketh, rlie holder of - The Auckland championship, and certainly one of tiie most prominent players in New 'Zealand, was Veil to the fore. ' She was New Zealand lady champion 1922-23, and winner of the New Zea-j land championship double's with her , partner, T. Murray, of Hamilton, the same >ear. In 1922 also she won the coveted New Zealand ladies’ champion-, ship. Another competitor was Mrs. Watkins, a prominent player, who is endeavouring to form a. Croquet Association in Hawke’s Bay. Throughout the tournament she has given one of the prettiest exhibitions of play ever, seen in this city. She won The New Zealand ladies’ championship 1923-24, and tile same season won the New Zealand doubles championship with her partner. Hector P. Stratton. In 1923 she won both the North Island open champion-' ship and the North Island ladies’ championship. • . V * ■ Mrs. G. Murray-Aynsley, one of - the best-known of the players on the lawns, was defeated in the ladies’ championship.' This player has been a great supporter of the game, having in the 1 past donated both the New Zealand ladies’ championship and the Canterbury championship caps. In 1922, with A. G. F. Ross, she won the New Zealand championship doubles; in 1921 she won both the New Zealand ladies’ championship and the New Zealand doubles chamoionship with lie>; partner, A. G. F, Ross. Mrs. Madden’s 1 decisive style again commanded interest. She is the present holder of the Canterbury ladies’ handicap. She has been champion of her club (United) four times, The last three being in successive years. Yesterday, v-ith her partner. Mrs E. Ay Smith, she won the final of the Nevr Zealand handicap doubles. On a former occasion she held the championship of the Wellington province.
