Mr A. AlcNeil, the bu.sdne.sis agent for the railways, was in Hawera yesterday and attended the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last' night-

Dr. W. AI. Thomson, of Hawera, has been, elected president of the Taranaki branch, of the B.AJ.A. in suecission. of Dr. G. Home. Dr. W. R. Wade, of New Plymouth, has been elected vice-president and -Dr. G. H. Thomson, how. secretary. Air A. O. Edwards, of Eltham, who is leaving in a fev iays to enter the Wellington Teachers ’ 'Training College, was tendered a farewell social by the members of All Saints’ Anglican Church, Eltham, last evening. Mr and Mrs A. E. Smalley and family, who are leaving Eltham shortly for Auckland, were given a farewell social at All Saints’ Church last night. In the absence of the vicar (Rev. Goldthorpe) through sickness, Air T. B. Crump occupied the chair and expressed deep regret at the loss or such valued church members.

Messrs. E. H. Hunt ; and P. B. Whitney (of Denver, Colorado, United States) are visitors, to the Dominion. They are geologists and oil experts, and’ .are on a' business trip to New Zealand. -

Mrs. W. B. Flea ron, of Kaponga, who for the . past six weeks has been away on a visit to relatives in the Auckland district, returned home via New Plymouth yesterday morning. The death of Sergeant Bartlett Provo occurred in Dunedin yesterday. Deceased, who was 86 years of age, came to the Dominion in 1863 with Colonel Pitt’s volunteers, known as “Pitt’s 4C0,” and he was a, member of the first volunteer corps formed in the colony in the fifties —-the Geelong Rifles. He saw much service durihg the Alaori war up the Waikato River, and also at Tauranga and Opotiki. He was a member of the Dunedin City Guards for 25 years, and he held the New Zealand War Aledal. the Imperial Decoration for Long Service, and the New Zealand Long Service Aledal. He was a familiar figure jn Dunedin at military functions, and also took a very , keen interest in rowing. Even when over 80 years his interest was unabated. He had been a first-class shot and jv good runner. At the Anglican Synod at Dunedin yesterday afternoon, a deputation was received from the Council of .Christian Congregations. ißev. Tulloch Yuille, president of the Council, welcomed the visiting clergy. He said he was glad members of the Council were not alien to the Church of England, and he believed that along the path of the work of the Council of Christian Congregations lay the open road to reunion of the churches. If they were to come to reunion, the sooner -they preached in each other’s pulpits the better,. Archbishop Julius said the relation between the churches was greater than he had ever dreamed. • Although there were many crying out against the slow progress of union, it had, :to his thinking. made wonderful strides. They might yet get so near-together as to be of* one heart and mind. After . a trip to the Old. Country, extending over a period of more than a year. Airs. J. P. Page, who formerly conducted an accountant’s business in Hawera? lias returned’ to her home town. Accompanied by her husband, who, by the way, lias gone on to Sydney on business, she spent seven months in England, visiting different counties and spending a considerable part of the time in London, while she also visited Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Germany, and France. On the return trip she /spent three months in America, proceeding to the Pacific coast via the Canadian Rockies and arriving at Auckland yin Alondav last, having completed a delightful and well-earned holiday.
