ELECTRIFYING ATHENS.
PIRAEUS -POWER STATION. It is confirmed that the Governor of the National Bank of Greece, M. Diomedes, lias arranged with the Tra etion and Power Finance Company, Ltd., of London, for the formation! of a .strong combine which will erect a large up-to-date station near to. supply electric! power and light to Athens anidl its surroundings, /which are very insufficiently suplied at present. This! combine will absorb the existing electric 'and gas companies, will electrify the Athensi-Eifissia Railway, and will extend the tramways. A capital of -£3,000,000 is required, of which, £2,000,000 will ibe subscribed by the British concern and £1,000,000 by a syndicate of Greek banks and a Belgian group. The arrangement has created great satisfaction here, as the electric power and light needls of Athens come* only next to those of water. . The Greek capital’s population has quadrupled i.sihee the present electric works were put up about twenty-five years ago.
