MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE AT OAMARU. [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) OAMARU, Feb. 4. In the Supreme Court to-day Ernest, Heselwood was charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of James Robert Young. He was also charged under the Motor Vehicles Act with driving negligently and carelessly so as to cause the death of Young, 1 and further with the causing of the death of Young through being intoxicated while driving a car. The evidence showed that the deceased, with a party of four' others, went to-the Georgetown Hofei, where they had several drinks. They also had at least one drink on the road home. When near town the car swerved and Young’s head struck a telegraph pole, causing the injuries from which he died. ( The jury, after a short retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty 7.

HOLMES RECEIVES FIVE YEARS.

OAMARU Feb. 4. John Holmes pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to-day to a charge of the attempted manslaughter to his wife bv shooting in November, and to a further charge of attempted suicide. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment on the charge of attempted manslaughter, and to six months on the charge of attempted suicide. Y DEATH OF A BABY. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 4. In the case against Eilein Bree. who was charged with the murder .of her newly born child, the jury returned the a verdict of manslaughter with a strong recommendation to mercy. The accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. SXTDDEN DEATH. > ~MAETON. Feb.. 5. Mrs William Byrne, aged 67, residing at Bulls, collapsed on Tuesday and .expired when she reached home. She was the mother of fifteen children, and lost seven sons in the war.
