UNION’S DEMANDS REFUSED
COMPANIES PROPOSE REDUCTIONS. jZ CABLE —PBESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. (Received Feb. 4, 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 3. Serious trouble in the railway world is anticipated by Mr Cramp, secretary of the National Union of Railvvaymen, as a result of the railway managers refusing the new wage demands from the union* and the Railway Clerks’ Association, and submitting counter proposals for big reductions. The union’s programme was farreaching. The companies estimate that it would mean an increase in wages of £30.000,000 annually. The companies propose immediate reductions in wages of four and aix shillings weekly in rural and industrial areas respectively. It is learned that under the Railways Act the whole matter t must lie submitted to the National Wages Board.-—Renter.
