HARD LUCK.

“THE HERMIT’S” MISFORTUNE. The following little incident goes to prove that those who go “punting” on horses need more than a fleeting glance from the Goddess of Fortune. About twenty-five years ago a little group was watching the horses getting saddled up for the Flying Handicap at an East Coast meeting. One of the party was a very well-known sporting journalist who had had at various times some extraordinary experiences in liis pursuit of fortune’s smiles on the racecourse. While the saddle was being put on one of the runners our sporting friend saw something fall to the ground; picking it up lie handed it to. the jockey and observed that it might be very useful when weighingin. There was another horse in the paddock which was little fancied but which our friend liked and eventually invested n couple of pounds on, .In due time the race was run, and the man’s feelings can he well imagined when his own horse, paying over £7O for first place, was beaten by a nose into second place by the horse to whose jockey he had given the lead. — Quidnunc.
