ILLITERACY.
PRACTICALLY NON-EXISTENT
POSITION IN THE DOMINION. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. Referring to the Commonwealth Statistician’s cabled remarks on the subject of the education of the people of the Commonwealth; it is 'torthy of remark that so far as New Zealand is concerned the position is that there is practically no illiteracy. Indeed the figures are so small, being less than o”per 1000 inclusive of mental detectives. that the Government Statistician’s office has discontinued tabulating them. ■ ~ \ The nroportion for 1916, which was the last year in which the figures were taken out was 4.17 per 1000, for 1911 4.97, and for 1906 3.76. These figures include all persons over five years of age but it lias to be remembered that there are many children who do not begin to attend school until the age of seven rears. With education free and compulsory in the Dominion illiteracy is nowl almost non-existent among New Zealand horn children, and an investigation ef its prevalence hag ]ost all significance.
