The Times’ Constantinople 'correspondent says : Turkey claims to lie acting strictly within her rights in expelling the Greek Patriarch. Ibis view is generally adopted by the press, which applauds the expulsion and declares the matter is an internal affair, in which foreigners have no right to interfere. The indications are that the Turks will hold this ground stubbornly; therefore careful reflection is necessary before any action is taken by the Powers. —Times. ATHEN’S CROWD DEMONSTRATES. ATHENS, Feb. 1. The whole country is in a ferment over the Patriarch’s expulsion, which is considered a breach of the Lausanne Treaty. The Archbishop of Athens says it is the beginning of a plan to uproot Eastern Christianity. It vitally affects Anglicans, and he has telegraphed the' Archbishop of Canterbury urging him to protest. Other accounts say that four bishops fear early expulsion. A mass meeting organised by the mayor carried a resolution urging the Government to take a strong attitude on the question of the expulsion of the Patriarch. Crowds subsequently >ar.ided .the streets, demanding revenge, and made a demonstration before tlie British legation. Special police measures were taken in the vicinity of the Turkish legat:on.
