POLICEMEN STABBED
IN SERVICE OF WARRANT. ASSAILANT SHOT 13Y ANOTHER CONSTABLE. BY CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Jan. 31, 10.35 a.m. MELBOURNE, Jan. 31. When Constables Rangott and Schabel were attempting to serve a commitment warrant on William Moran in the street, the latter rushed them and stabbed Schabel in one leg, then stabbed Rangott in the hands and legs. The latter threw him and called for help, but Moran escaped to his home, where he barricaded himself in. The constables were removed to hospital. Later a posse of police visited Moran’s home and broke"down the door. Constable Burns led the way in and was immediately stabbed in the groin, but as he fell he fired two shots from a revolver, the second taking feet, in Moran's jaw. Although outnumbered, Moran continued to fight like a maniac. He was finally handcuffed and removed to the lock-up. , Burns’s wound is serious and Moran s condition critical. Schabel’s and Rangott’s wounds, though painful, arc not serious.
