SOME GREAT MARES. THEIR BREEDING RECORDS. ‘■’Beacon” of the Melbourne Leader writes as follows concerning some famous racing mares well known to turf men in New Zealand.
Gladsome and Cruciform were great mares. Cruciform was almost, if not quite, the equal of Wakeful, whom she beat in the Spring Stakes at Randwick, and again in the Craven Plate, but in the latter race both, were beaten by Ibex, who stole the race. In fairness to Wakeful iE should, however, be admitted that she was not quite at her best at tlie time. Still, all things being equal, there-could not have been much between Wakeful and Cruciform.
At the stucl Cruciform had good chances, as she was at Bundoora, and was mated with Wallace, but she did not breed anything approaching firstclass form. Gladsome did a little better, as she was the dam of useful, horses hi Allansfortl and Glad Star. They did win -races, but very modest ones. One of the truly great mares in Australian turf history was Lurline, with whom Richard Mason came to Australia drom New Zealand somewhere about ISfo. Mr. Gardiner bad her at Bundoora when she had finished racing, and she became the dam of the ,Sydney Cup winner, Darebin, who afterwards went to California, where he became a great 4ire. A great race mare who mustbe classed among the successful ones is Lady Wallace. She became the dam of the A.J.C. Derbr winner Cisco. Lit? was not a great Derby' winner, and his later form leff something to he desired, but at his best lie was a good horse, and so was Balarang, another son of Lady Wallace. Lie won the Futurity Stakes and other good races, and afterwards went to fhe East. Cady Trenton was a Sydney Cud winner, and although her pedigree could not be traced rery far, she was a good mare both
on the turf and at tlie stud, as she neeame the dam of Lord Cardigan, a winner oi both the Melbourne and Sydney Cup*. t arlita has so tar proved a •failure, thy best ol her progeny to date being Lunita. Simmerette, ttie dam of Traquette, was a very sinaiL winner, out she has been a stud success, as in addition to Traquette. she is the dam of Ettefred, a Maribyrnong Plate winner. Fraility. one ol the. greatest Australian brood mares, was never; raced. She was the dam of Trenton, Cuirassier, Havoc. Zalinski, Siege dim, and other good horses. Frmlity is useful to support the contention that brood mares are much hotter il they nave not been raced.
Spearnient, the only son of Carbine to win tlie English Derby, was from a nutre who was never trained. Lord Falmouth, who was one of the. most successful breeders in tlie history of English racing, did not believe in racing mares for any great length of time. In a period of twelve years lie won fourteen classic races with horses of his own breeding. He won the Derby twice with Kingcraft and Silcio, and his other classic victories were One Thousand Guineas (tluce times). Two Thousand Guineas (three times). Oaks (three times), and St Leger (three times). Lord Falmo.uth invariably retired his fillies after their three-year-old season was over. Cecilia, Spinaway, Wit eel of Fortune and Jannette all began stud life when four years old. Pocahontas was a bad rearer, and did little racing, starting about ten times . all told. Her racing record was rather inglorious, but she made atonement by breeding Sfockwell, Rataplan and King ’font, three great racehorses and sires. Two mares who were heavily raced were Alice Hawthorn and Beeswing, yet both did welh at the stud. Alice Hawthorn was tthe dam of the Derby winner. Thormanby, and Beeswing bred Newminster, a St Leger winner. Both became great sires. Another famous mare who did a tremendous amount of racing was Kinc-sen, who was bred in Hungary, but did most of her racing in England. She won over fifty races, and was never beaten. They were not insignificant stakes, as one of them was the Goodwood Cup. She went back to her native land and became a wonderfully successful brood mare, and her descendants were winning big races in Hungary and Austria before the war. Sceptre and Pretty Polly were two of the greatest mares of modern times in England, hut neither achieved great success at the stud. Sceptre produced nothing within stones of Iter own form, hut some of her daughters ar© doing well at the stud. Pretty Polly was a complete, failure.
