GRATEFUL SPARROW.
A THAMES WATERMAN’S FRIEND. A Thames waterman on the landing stage of Cherry Garden Pier, Bermondsey, S.E., recently saw a sparrow in the river find rescued it, all but drowned. The bird was placed by a stove and dried. It soon recovered and ate a meal of bread and butter, after -which it was leased. It hovered about the pier for some days, and. coaxed by regular fercling and geprle whist.es, became quite tame No .• it refuses to leave the place, and follows its rescuer about the pier. 'f.be bird has been christened Joe and has learnt to answer a whistle and to feed from its rescuer’s hand. It refuses fo eat anything but. bread and blitter.
