(By Maecenas.) The Egmont and Taranaki meetings should make the hurdle races interesting- : Spveral houses ran most consistently at the Wellington meeting just held, but possibly Iva-lak.aua, showed the truest- form, for each clay he was only inches, behind the winner in trying races. Although very few houses, from the Taranaki province raced at the Wellington meeting, as. usual: they paid their way handsomely, lor Lady Cavendish and Hipo each credited their owners with good prizes. Trainer .1. Lowe has Jubilance very well just now, and if he elects to take this imported filly south lor the Dunedin meeting she should at least pay expenses, as she is decidedly useful. Lnughrea lost a lot- of ground at the .start of the AYellington Cup through colliding with Man.tua, but the slow pace set in the, early stages .enabled him to get a. lair position - again, bub for some inexplainable reason, Loughrea was never going like a winner. He is well handicapped in the Dunedin Cup. and it may be that he will reveal his true form in the southern race.

The ixoatoamri stu’chhaster. 31 r. G. Currie, started, two of Limoiul’s progeny .(Vaudeville and ■ Ada vale) at the Wellington meeting, and although the nair named went, fair races, their form would not strengthen the position of the imported Limoiul as_ a sire. L may be that tills breed, unlike the. Absurd's,, want time. One point in the favour of Limond's stock is the fact that they are we.ll grown. Trainer Jefferd’s horses have all suffered with a form of cold, and in consequence did not do themselves justice a.t Trenthiam last week, but Star Stranger showed sufficient pace to suggest that he will win. in the no distant future. On her running at- the Wellington meeting, Tauhine may never take a high place amongst racehorses, for after being well ridden, and bolding a good position ait the critical (stage, Tauhine failed to come on, over the final part of her races. Of course, the fact- that Tauhine had only shaken off a cold may in a degree account for her indifferent showings. In his early career Quest was raced over long courses by Trainer T. Quinlivan with poor results, which earned Quest the reputation, of being a “quitter.” After joining S. Reid's team, Quest was tried at the other, extreme, and for a- time was kept at short distance, racing, which, resulted in hisi form being; little better, but of late Trainer Reid has, raced Quest over middle distances, with, the result that Quest is showing most reliable form. Whether the son of Martian will maintain; this remains to be seen. Present indications point to the Egmont and Taranaki Clubs having most successful meetings this season. During the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, Fools’ Paradise was under offer to a, client acting on behalf of an Australian buyer, but luckily for his owner no deal resulted, and Fools’ Paradise subsequently won. In the first iseven furlongs of the recently run Wellington Cup little better than three-quarter pace was mantaiued, as. it took 1.3-1 to run it, but the pace was on over the last five, which, was encompassed in the fast time of 60 seconds.

The English bred Grand Knight ha.s particularly lengtbv pasterns, and has a, tendency to go down on his heels in consequence; I bis, of course, makes Grand Knight voiy sore, and with the idea, of getting over Ibis disability the import cd one was raced in a special boot mi the lp.-t rlay of the Wellington meeting, but performed badly, and according In a Wellington writer; these boots may not be used on Grand Knight again. Considering .the pace was so slow over half of the journey in the AYollingtnn. Cup recently run, it was certainly bad poliev to have Limelight at. the tail end of the field, and giving the leaders many lengths; start. As Limelight finished very close to the “placed'.’ division, it would .appear that more judiciously ridden Limelight must have filled a. “place,’’ and it would not he surprising to find this

little marc running prominently in the Dunedin Cup. which event i* run on 'Thursday week. At the recent. Wellington meeting a well known ..sportsman put in a fair commLssiQU on what he intended to he Rob. Rob subsequently won. and paying over two “limits” the backer invested several hundred in a. horse on the .strength oi Rob s, success, hut imagine hi- feelings when be found out that not Rob but another horse’s number bad been put on. the commission ticket. However the incident did not turn out so bad after all. as the purchase won. at. the first time of' asking. .Resent Cold’s daughter. Oreum, was a runner on the first, and second days of the recent Wellington meeting, but her form was. many removes from that shown by her mother at the same age, ,still it was not. bad. and if Oreum shows slight improvement, she will at least win races-, as in each of. her races Oreum finished quite as well as most of those opposing her. There is a resemblance between Oreum and her famous, dam.

After his good showing in. the D'ourn Cup. the .southerner. Garpen.tier. was backed as. if a, certainty for his last day’s engagement at Trentbam. and although the field looked a particularly good one for a “hack” race, Carpentier was net paying even money. This appeared ridiculous, but when it is stated that there was a little help for the. “good thing.” his price is not to he wondered at. However, the best laid plains, of mice and men, etc., are applicable to the race, for pimping out badly Ca.rpe.n.tier never threatened danger, hence good money,.went -astray.
