(From Our Own Correspondent.) CHAMBER QF COMMERCE. The council of the Chandler of Commerce met last evening. Those present were: Messrs Bridget- (president) in the chair, Cai&on, Jackson, Ricketts, Carroll. Peebles and the secretary (Mr ft. Prosser). Apologies were received from Messrs Hentv, Thomas, Young and Harrison. The president reported that the remit to the annual conference of the Chambers of Commerce, held at Wanganui in November last, dealing with the amendment to the Rating Act giving power to borough councils to create an inner area for the purpose of levying a special rate to provide the salary for a night-watchman, had Ireen shut out of the order paper owing to the pressure of other matters.-—lt was decided to forward the matter to the member for the district, Mr <). Hawken. for attention. . The secretary read certain correspondence from the president concerning the half-page advertisement in the Dominion special Christmas number with (regard to conditions of contract, and ; refusing to recognise the liability for (the mice charged.—On the motion of 'Messrs Ricketts and Jackson the presi--1 dent’s action was confirmed. I It was reported that the Father [Christmas effort had again been very I successful, and some 2000 excellent gifts had been distributed. The president said that he desired to thank the business people for their hearty and ready response to the financial appeal this year. He and Mr Carson had had much pleasure in noting the generous spirit of the tradespeople. and it was a great pleasure to collect the funds. A vote of thanks and appreciation was passed to the Plunket Society Committee, Messrs Gower Bros., Mr Douglas Clement, Mrs Foord and Miss Townsend and all who assisted to make the function a success.

The dangerous nature of the railway creasing at the top end of Bridge street was introduced by the president, avho stated the crossing was a most dangerous one, particularly as the traffic was heavy over the line at this noint and the annroaches were affected bv buildings.—The secretary was instructed to write to the department, drawing attention to the matter. Six new members were elected, viz. : Messrs W. Ricketts. D. Clement, A. O. Casev, F. Coward, Alf. AVare and J. H. 1 Morton.
