BLOTTED OUT
ISLAND DISAPPEARS.
OFF WEST AFRICAN COAST.
NO SURVIVORS REPORTED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Jan. 28, 9.45 a.in.) LISBON, Jan. 27. The- Government has received confirmation of the blotting out of tlie island and town of Port Alexander, in the south of Portuguese West Africa. Earlier wireless reports to this effect were regarded sceptically. Rescue ships now report they picked up front a raging sen a. number of sailors, who resembled gibbering madmen as they told the story of the catastrophe. According to them, the bosom of the sea suddenly heaved mountain high, then dropped in a swirling maelstrom, under which the island disappeared. Only floating debris and scores'of dead bodies indicated the scene of the disaster, which is attributed to seismic disturbances.
At present it is believed, that not a single inhabitant survived, but it is hoped that some may be washed up on the mainland, where dozens of small craft are stranded. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
