RAILWAY SERVICES.
OFFICERS GO ABROAD. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONWELLINGTON, Jan. 2. . One of the recommendations of the Railway Commission was that officers from the railway service should go abroad to obtain an insight into many phases of railway operations. On Friday Mr. Janies Mason, a member of the Railway Board of Management, and Air. P. R. Angus, locomotive engineer, 1 will leave by the Maheno for Sydney, en route for South Africa to investigate matters there. They will he absent for several months, and oq their return will present a report. to the Minister. Mr. Mason will study matters of general administration,* while Air. Angus, who up till the present has been locomotive engineer at Greymouth, will look into technical questions. South Africa has been selected as it presents features analagous to those existing in the Dominion, inasmuch as the South African system is Stateowned and lias a 3ft. 6in. gauge. Two other officers from the ei VI I engineering and traffic branches are to he sent abroad also, and Mr. E. J. Guinness. Controller of Stores, is to study the working bf the railway stores in New South Wales. While Air Mason is absent, Mr. A. W. Mount, district traffic manager. Auckland, will he acting-member of the Railway Board.
