THE PRICE OF TEA.
RISE PROBABLY LASTING. Dealing with. the- recent increases in the price of tea, an exchange says : “Tea is very much dearer to-day than before the war. 'lbis is explained generally by the growing world demand. 'Hie consumption, lias increased more particularly in the United States, where a .subsidiary efleet of prohibition is that more- tea is being drunk. Taste in America, is also said to be swinging from coffee to tea as the everyday beverage. Prior to the Bolshevik regime, Russia was a, great tea-drinking country and her gradual re-entry into the- tea market is also assisting the hardening of prices." Another* statement puts down the. increase in 'consumption as partly due to the. habit, acquired by men who went front. An indication that tea will remain at the high, prices ruling is afforded by a. report that several London buyers have bought out certain crops- in Java and in Ceylon until 1927.
