TARATtT MINING ACCIDENT. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 26. The body of James McGowan, who was killed at the Taratu mine, was recovered on Saturday afternoon. DEATH IN ORPHAN HOME. AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. At the inquest- into, the circumstances surrounding the death of Enid Marie Kermode, aged 9, who died suddenly in the Papatoetoe Orphan Home camp on Saturday, the evidence showed that the child became ill on Tuesday. On Friday she showed an improvement, but relapsed and died before daylight. A post mortem disclosed that death was due to heart failure, following acute diarrohaea. This was the first death in the Orphan Home for 30years
BOY DROWNED. NAPIER, Jan. 26. Edwin Alexander Hawthorn, aged 13, was drowned at Haumoana yesterday. DUNEDIN DOINGS. DUNEDIN, Jail. 26. At the Police Court, Richard James Benson, a watersider, was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment for stealing a bottle of whisky from an overseas steamer. It was mentioned that there was sickness in the accused’s family and he had taken the spirits for medical purposes. As it sequel to a disturbance at South Dunedin last night, Robert McGregor, was admitted to hospital in a serious condition. This morning a young married man named James Hugh McLella'n, was charged with assault, and remanded on bail. The police stated that there was likelihood of there being a fatal issue. The inquiry indicating a fracture of the skull.
RESCUED FROM DROWNING
BLENHEIM, Jan. 26
Prompt action of two members of the Blenheim Rowing Club resulted in the saving of the life of a lad, 'Noel Reid, who was in danger of drowning in the Opawa River. Reid and another lad, J. Toms, were out in a canvas canoe, when it upset. Toms could swim and made for the hank, but Reid was left straggling. Cyril Hadfield and Alfred Criciley, who had had a swim after a row, were going to dress in the rowing* shed when they heard cries for help. They plunged into the river, -swam to the opposite hank, and ran over 120 yards to the scene of the mishap. Plad field w Reid sink for the last time. Diving in he swam under water and seized him, and helped bv Gridlev he not, Reid out. and artificial respiration was successful. ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. R'ebert Whiffen, aged 50, was charged at the Police Court to-d.ty with the manslaughter of John Bailey, aged 65. Witnesses stated that they saw the accused strike Bailey, while one stated that Bailey made a move as if to detain the accused and then the accused struck Bailey on the chin. Bailey fell back, striking the back of his head on the footpath. He was taken to the hospital, where lie died three weeks later. •In a statement to the Chief Detective, the accused said that lie was in the bar of an hotel, but was not drinking with the deceased, whom he had known for 30 years. Leaving the hotel he met Bailey*and hit him with the back of his hand on the head and Bailey then fell to the footpath. He admitted that Bailev gave no provocation. The accused was committed for trial.
