STUD SHEEP
BIG PURCHASE
STOCK FOR SOUTH AFRICA
SYDNEY, Jan. 23. The purchase by Sir Abe Bailey, the South African millionaire, of the Zara stud, the property of Mr. Ei. Officer, one of the leading New South Wales merino is viewed with concern by sheep breeders. The deal is one of the biggest on record in its way, and the shippihg of the whole flock is. considered of importance as affecting the possibility of future competition v/|ith Australian m/erino, in with the cheaper labour in South Africa- will prove a bigger factor. A leading breeder claims that the purchase was made for the purpose of establishing a straight out strain of Merinos on the lines of the stud flocks in Australia? with a view of creating a uniform type of wool in competiton with the Australian product. The question is again being agitated, whether it is wise to allow the export of stud sheep. A motion in favour of prohibition was rejected at the last conference of the Graziers’ Association, but it is likely that it will be submitted again at the next conference in Sydney.
