NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. Although the fields to-day were much smaller than on the opening day, the racing was very interesting. course wag again dry and fast. Ihe attendance, which was remarkyably larae, fully taxed the accommodation of "the large and impressive stands. Speculation was very brisk. . For the Mungaroa High AA eight Handicap Steel Bar was made a good favourite, but solid support tor Bonena made his dividend quite a, fair one. When the tapes lifted, Otaura set but as pacemaker, and, followed by Steel Bar, Kalakaua and Bonena, led to the home turn, where Steel Bar made his effort and looked a comfortable winner till Kalakaua and Bonena made late runs, and, ridden out, Steel Bar only heat Kalakaua, with Bonena a neck away third. A very useful lot went to the post tor the January Welter, and when betting ceased on the event Tuahine was a big favourite from Fool’s Paradise and Tarleton. When the field settled down, Fool’s Paradise, Puketoi, and Sir Pam were the leading division, and as the field steered for the straight. Fool’s Paradise was just in front of Puketoi, Tuahine, and Imperial Spark, but over the last furlong Quest finished fast to win easily from Imperial Spark and T re sham. Gold Acre was backed for the Nursery as if the event was all over, and it proved just as good as the betting indicated, for, jumping out well, Gold Acre was always in a leading position, and over the last couple of furlongs cleared right out from his opponents. Victory Bond again demonstrated that lie is useful and game, but fought out a game finish to beat Oreum and Adavale. , Several of the runners for the Trial Plate received good support, Sanctuary being actual favourite from Gauntlet and Westbroke. From a fair start Westbroke began best, but Flaming Ray soon took charge and led AVestbroko and Gauntlet to the straight. In the run home a good race took place, Roy Reed landing Gauntlet ,awinner by half a length, with heads between Carnot End Copper Nob. Goldlight was a pronounced favourite for the Wellington Handicap, with McKenzie’s pair, Sunart and Cleasanta, next in order of favouritism, while Landslide, Suggestion, and Listening Post also came in for good support. When the tapes rose the field moved off in line. Then Landslide took up the running from Mantua, Suggestion, Cleasanta. and Gold Light. As the field raced up the back. Landslide still lee! from Mantua', Bonnetter, and Cleasanta. There was little change till heads were turned for homo, at which stage Deucalion, with .a good run, tackled Landslide, only to he cut down by Listening Post, Mantua, and Suggestion. The last-named finished fast, and although he cut Mantua down, he had no chance with Listening Post, which won well from Suggestion, with Mantua and Deucalion next.

There was a pool of over five figures on the Douro Cup, for which event Pelham was a great favourite, while The Tank was the onlv other runner to reach four figures. When the tapes rose, Hall Mark was temporarily in front from Pelham. Then Tinohari rushed to the- lead, and at the six furlong post Tinohari was still leading from Bonnie Cold. Pelham. Hall Mark. Jubilance, and Pronto. Turning for home, Bonnie Cold was just in front of Tinohari and Pelham, but a little

later O’Shea called on Pelham and he soon opened a good lead, but over the timil stages Eu Route and, later, Carpentier, put in a good run, hut Pelham won comfortably, while Eli Route just beat Carpentier. The Metropolitan Handicap produced a good betting race, although Merit was a good favourite. Pencils, Gaillard, and Snatcher following in that order. From what appeared to be a good start. Orchid, Grand Knight, and Gaillard began smartly, and this trio led Merit on to the course proper. Over the last furlong a great race took place, condition giving Merit a slight advantage oyer Grand Knight, with Last -Crust and Peneus close' up. / Racing concluded with the Camp Hack Handicap, for which event Piquant was the public choire, with Lipsol, Blonde, and Finora backed as written. AA’hen the position could he picked lip, it was found that Rob and Finora were in charge from Piquant ail’d Blonde. Over the concluding stages Piquant challenged, but Rob hung on well to win, Piquant just beating Blonde.
