TYPHOID OUTBREAK. (by TJiLUGEArn —PXiESS ASSOCIATION.) I ROTORUA, Jan. 21. | A serious outbreak of typhoid lias j occurred at Mangapoliatu in the Uiewera country. Twelve cases lia\e been reported and three deaths. A doct and two nurses are on the snot and an additional doctor and three nmses leave Rotorua, to-night. Camp hospital equipment left early this morning. Alangapohatu is only accessible _by horseback from Ruatahuna by a precipitous mountain route. WATERSIDERS AND A WINE CASK AUCKLAND, Jan. 21. In the Police Court five watersiclers John Burley, Henry Thornton Samsburv Victor Nugent, John Alfred ±±orspool ’and George Wynn—-were charged with the theft of a gallon of wine from a shed on a wharf after discharge from the steamer Tekoa. Detective McHugh described how he saw the accused on various occasions stooping over a wine cask. So the witness examined the cask and found a small hole in the top. - From the actions of the accused he assumed that they were drinking. All the defendants denied the charge. The magistrate decided that the accused went to the cask for the purpose of tasting the contents. The law made no allowance for human weakness, but this was like n schoolboy escapade. There was no evidence that the accused had broached the cask. One having discovered it, the others took a sip. None was taken awav in vessels. The ends of justice would he met by dismissing the case as trivial and ordering the accused to pay costs.
EIRE CHIEF FINED
CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 21
At tlie Magistrate’s Court this afternoon further evidence was heard in the case in which diaries Warner, superintendent of the Christchurch Eire Brigade, was charged with drunkenness while in charge of a motor-car. using indecent language, and oekaving in a threatening manner. Counsel said Warner only had two whiskies and was driving at 20 miles per hour. The car had swerved because a. back tyre, burst.. ■ The defendant gave evidence that he had been at the Richmond .Working Men's Club playing etichre prior to the accident. He denied being intoxicated and said he was not in the habit of using had language. A tramway motorman gave evidence that Warner passed him going at twelve miles an hour. He saw Warner later and was positive lie was not drunk. . Warner was convicted and fined 40s for using indecent language, and was convicted and ordered to pay costs for threatening behaviour. The charge of drunkenness was dismissed. THEFT OF POSTAL PACKETS. DUNEDIN, Jan. 2.1. At the city Police Court to-day Robert Aspinall McCutcheon, aged seventeen years,' appeared on remand to answer six charges of theft of postal packets containing goods to the total value of £2 15s 2d, and a money order aii'cl postal notes of a total value of £4 18s Gd, which were allegedly committed between October 3, 1924. and December 27, 1921. while lie was employed at the Balelutha post office as a message hoy. The evidence showed that the accused belonged to a very respectable family. Accused nleaded guilty to all charges, and was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. Rail was granted, being fixed at £SO with a surety of £SO, on condition that. 'the accused reported daily to the police.
TWO MEN MISSING. OAMARU, Jan. 21. A young man named Andrew ‘Metcalfe, aged 22, lias been missing from home for two days. His bicycle was found on the breakwater. Fears are entertained regarding hi& safety, ai.d the police are dragging the harbour. No trace has yet been found of Frank Graveson, secretary of the Hotel Workers’ Union, who has been missing for a week. COURT AT OAMARU. OAMARU. Jan. 21., At the Magistrate’s Court to-dav EnreSit Heleswood was charged with being drunk while in charge of a car and negligently driving the car so as to cause the death of Robert James Young. The accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence and was committed for trial to the Supreme Court on February 4. Arising out of the same case the licensee of the Georgetown Hotel was charged on three different counts with breaches of the Licensing Act. After hearing evidence the magistrate (Mr. If. W. Bundle) reserved his decision.
Four men, who were in the car on the occasion of the fatality, were each fined sums ranging from £1 to £2 for being found on licensed premises after hours. BOXING .CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, .Jan. 21. The conference of the New Zealand Boxing Associaetion, held to-day, decided by thirteen votes to six to abolish the centre system of control. SALUTARY SENTENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 21. Lionel Charles Burke, aged 42, pleaded guilty this morning to charges of being drunk while in charge of a motor car, of resisting a constable and of using obscene language. The case arose out of an accident yesterday/ when Burke knocked down a girl cyclist. The accused was a commercial traveller, and was married. He was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. DIET) FROM INJURIES. AUCKLAND. Jan. 21. John Barley, aged Go. died in the hospital to-day. He was admitted on December 27, suffering from head injuries. Robert Wiffen is at present on remand on a charge of assaulting the deceased on the date of his entry into hospital. An inquest will be opened this afternoon.
