COMPLIMENTARY LUNDELEON. TRIBUTE TO ANZAC COMMANDER. liY CABLE—CRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Jan. 21, 12.35 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 20. Sir William Birdwood was entertained at luncheon by the Australian and New Zealand Luncheon Club at Hotel Cecil. Sir' Edward Lucas presided, and in proposing the toast of General Binlwocd’s health, lie urged the maintenance of an efficient navy, especially in view of the future immense development in the Pacific. He paid tribute to General Birdwood and said that next to the King and the R'oya.l Family, no man in the British Empire was more welcome to Australians and New Zealanders, who admired him as a soldier, still more as a man and a gentleman. General Birdwood, in. bis reply, referred to a book describing India as a lost Dominion. He said lie did not believe any Dominion would ever be lost to us. provided always that we showed by word and by deed that we meant to govern firmly, justly, wisely, and. what was equally essential, with continuity of policy. He said the Press had done a wonderful amount of good for the Empire, and hoped they would do still more.
