CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIPS. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.! CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 20. The eleventh New Zealand croquet championships commenced to-dav. There were large entries from all parts of the Dominion, the president (Mr. T. F. Chambers) stating that it was the most distinguished gathering of experts that had ever assembled in New Zealand.
In the handicap doubles, Airs. Gambrill and Mrs. W. J. Robertson (Palmerston North) beat Mrs. Summers and All's. Wood (St. Albans) by 27 to 7 \ f
MOTOR FATALITY AT CHRISTCHURCH.
CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 20
John Davis, an elderly man, while strolling in Manchester Street this morning was struck and killed by a taxi-cab hurrying to the station. The car then crashed into a heavy iron verandah* post and uprooted it from the ground. The driver was Charles Mclntosh. There was little traffic about at the time.
JOY RIDER PUNISHED
AUCKLAND, Jan. 20.
Leonard Edward Brastings, aged 21, was charged to-day with converting a motor-car to his own use, and with driving while drunk. It Was stated that he took a car from the street yesterday, but it was recognised later by a taxi-driver, who gave chase, head, ed the accused off, and stopped him at the expense of a damaged mudguard. The accused was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. CYCLIST SERIOUSLY HURT. HOKITIKA. Jan. 20. While, practising with a motor cycle on the racecourse last evening. Eric Park, a clerk at the National Bank, third son of Mr. Park, Crown Prosecutor, met with an accident. The machine collided with a picket fence, the rider receiving severe injuries to his head and left arm. Hi/» condition continues to be very serious, but it is hoped to save the arm.
