CANADIAN INDEPENDENCE
RUMOURS DEPLORED
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION COPY RIG UT OTTAWA, Jan. 19.
“There never has been any serious talk in Canada, either of annexation to the United Stales or of any independent existence apart from the British Commonwealth of Nations,” declared the Premier (Mr McKenzie King) in a speech. He said Canadians geneiall.y would resent any revival of the annexation cry or anv talk of Canada’s separation ‘from the Empire. Such a rumour had lieeu given publicity m British newspapers of late, and there was said to he uneasiness in Britain over the prospect. Canadian people would resent and deplore any uneasiness on that score. Discussing inter-lmpenal relations, the Premier said neither an Imperial federation nor an Imperial council was practicable. The present system, known as the Commonwealth of British Nations, was much more desirable. Twenty years ago Sir Wilfrid Laurier was charged with separatist tendencies because fie called the British Empire a galaxy of nations, but after twenty years Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s views had been vindicated by the public utterances of His Majesty the King.
