MUNICIPAL BAND.

QUESTIONS RAISED AT COUNCIL. ROTUNDA AT THE PARK. THE ANNUAL SUBSIDY. At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council band matters caused considerable discussion, two requests—permission to play weekly in the Park and the question of the annual subsidy—being before the Council. Dealing with the request submitted to give performances in the Park once a. week, some_ discussion took place on the facilities ' necessary for effective playing, and in the course of remarks by councillorsil&ttention was drawn, to the unsatisfactory condition of the rotunda above the tea kiosk, which apparently is useless for its purpose. The question, of altering it so as to improve its acoustic properties and make it fulfil its purpose was raised by Cr Burdekin. A suggestion by Cr Brunette to have lights fixed for the staging in the Park was also considered, the cost of which would be about £B.

At the conclusion of a general discussion it was decided to refer the matter to the Reserves Committee, who will consult with the bandmaster, Lieut. Fox, with a view to some satisfactory arrangement. Following on the request for payment of the second instalment of the subsidy, some discussion ensued on the question whether the Council was bound to pay the whole of the £2OO, promised to the band for one year, before March 31. The Mayor said that this must be done to carry out the decision of the Council. If, he added, an unmusical council came in liext year they might refuse to give anything. Cr Reid suggested that the intention, was not to pay the amount this year, but spread it over twelve months.

Cr Burdekin said the Council was not empowered to do this, and if the amount were not paid a new council could upset the arrangement. A fresh estimate would be necessary for the coming year, as the band asked only what was required. Cr Brunette said they could not break faith with the band, who were relying on the £2OO. It was decided to consult the bandmaster on the question of future arrangements.
