TOLL-GATES.

POSITION IN TARANAKI

HIGHWAYS BOARD PROPOSALS

/The question of toll-gates in Taranaki received attention at the January meeting of the Main Highways Board. The official report of the meeting contains this paragraph: At -the past few meetings the hoard has had before it* the question of abolition of toll-gates in Taranaki. It will be recalled that there is no power to maintain or establish a toll-gate on a main highway, and those sections of roads affected by toll-gates in Taranaki were expressly omitted from the roads declared to be maiq, highways. Two of the gates, Waihi in. the Clifton County (on the main road to the north of New Plymouth) and the Waipuku gate in the Stratford County (on the main north road between Stratford and Inglewood), are to be closed, and at this meeting certain alternative proposals were decided upon in connection with the others. These are to be submitted to the Government for consider, ntion.
