TRENTHAM TRAINING NOTES. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON. Jan. 17. At Trentham to-day the tan track was used. Piquant, with the worst of the weights, galloped five furlongs with Merit, the latter finishing in front in 1.1 1-5. Both were going well. Peach Brandy alone, with a good weight, strode over seven furlongs in 1.31.
Wench, who appeared rather tender, was given half pace work on the tan. Lake Urn and Ares were together at the end of five furlongs in 1.2 1-5. Jubilance, from a galloping start, ran six fnilorigs in 1.16 2-5. Her stable mate, Star Ranger, covered a similar distance in 1.18 1-5.
Matin Bell and Master Sandstone ran five furlongs in 1.2 1-5, both hitting out well.
Quiescent was too good for Aerofonn over a mile in 1.43 2-5.
Anthem and Quest sprinted five furlongs iii 1.3. Tuahine and Gauntlet ran half a mile in 51 4-5. Both look well.
Glimpse alone galloped five furlongs in 1.4. the last four in 51 sec.
Tinohari and Last Crust covered five furlongs in 1.1 4-5. Ardfinnan and Stream rail five furlongs in 1.2 3-5. Anthonie and Phantasy ran three furlongs in 37 3-ssec, the first two in very .fast time.
Surveyor and Pelham, from a galloping start, did seven furlongs in 1.35. the last five in 1.5 2-5, Surveyor going better at the finish.
Mountain Jean and Star Shell ran five furlongs in 1.3 2-5. Miisketoon, after being given a good working gallon for about six furlongs, was picked up by Lady Ridicule at fflie seven furlong post, and the pair came home together at a good three-quarter pace. Miisketoon appears to be in great heart. The Tank was brought home over tlie last half-mile bv Bonnie Nurse, who galloped six furlongs in 1.1.6, the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec. \ All Gold and a mate ran six furlongs in 1.10 4-5.
J., T. Jamieson hail his horses on the track. Landslide, Gold Acre and Steel Bar were given strong three-quarter pace work. All appear ,to be in good condition. Tresham was in front of Otauru in a gallop over seven furlongs in 1.33. Fool’s Paradise and Grand Knight were together at the end of half a mile in 49sec. It was a nice piece *>f work, as both were going W,ell at the finish, while Grand Knight had the outside and tlie worst of the weights. Gluement and Pink Rose covered seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5, the last six in 1.18 1-5. '
Ilka, going,.very nicely, covered half a mile in 50' l-ssec. Listening Post and Gerenial ran sixfurlongs in 1.14 2-5. Listening Post had much the worst of the weights, but was in front at the finish. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas). Mr Bishop, who acts as clerk of scales to the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, will assist tlie judge at the AVellington races to-morrow. Merit is galloping particularly well at Trenthanij and if not- carried off her legs by tlie speedy prehid, should, make the Telegraph Handicap to-mor-row most interesting. Royal Blood will be ridden by J. O’Shea at Trentham to-morrow, and being a brilliant and honest gelding, is certain to give his supporters a good run, but the long straight and bigweight may make his task too hard. Goldlight is a. fine mare, and as honest as one could find, but although she is not harshly treated by tlie handicapper, to win tlie Wellington Cup to-morrow may be beyond her. although she is certain to he in the fighting line. Tarleton is much fancied for tlie Wellington Cup in certain quarters. He will have the services of A. Reed, but to my way of thinking is too uncertain to rely oil in a difficult race as to-morrow’s Cup nuly prove to he. Although not milch fancied by the general public’, it may bp found that Miisketoon has put tip a fine race in the Wellington Cup when that event has been decided. A horse of moods, but a real bold finisher, this imported horse has shown on occasions that he is above the average, and in tlie hands of a good horseman like R. Reed the Wellington Cup of 1925 may be within his capabilities. Seeing tliaT Steel Bar was backed by good judges to win the strongest possible hack handicap at the Auckland carnival, he should be worthy of consideration in tlie High Weight Handicap at Trentham to-morrow.
Ju 28 contests for the Wellington Stakes two-year-olds have been .successful. on no less than 21 occasions, a really great record. In to-morrow’s contest for the same race there are ten two-year-olds engaged, while only a trio of three-year-olds are engaged. Although carrying the full penalty of 11 lbs, Runnymede. can he expected to do well.
Fool’s Paradise is doing good work at Trcntliam, and although not a solid stayer, is expected to show up well in the Anniversary Handicap. Tauhine, In the same race, has shown lots of speed at times, and with the assistance •-!' It. Reed may stay too well for tool’s Paradise.
The Aucklander Pelham has a good reputation, and at the recent meeting held at Fllerslie ran most consistently. He is engaged in the Apprentices’ Plate, hut in the event will get plenty of opposition from Matin Hell, who is a promising sort, and is working remarkably well. jtisL now. As stated in these columns a few days ago, Piquant is at her host' jusL now. and many will, he surprised should the imported mare not pay her way at the meeting. She is engaged in the Ruapehu Hack to-morrow, which event is decided over a live-furlong course, a distance that suits Piquant. As no rain has fallen for a consider aide time at Trent ham, the race track will he hard and fast for to-morrow’s racing.
After advising that space was not available for Luughroa on the ferry steamer, the Union Company telegraphed the owner on Thursday last, stating that space would he made, hence the decision to send the Otago representative.
Limelight is getting through groat work at Riaenrton, add appeal's to have benefited by the Auckland racing, and it appears certain that the Canter-bury-owned mare will play a prominent Dart in the settlement of to-morrow’s Wellington Cun. The English-bred Grand "Knight had a reputation for pace when in Eng
land, aiid in his private work since arriving lii New Zealand he lias - sustained that reputation, although in public Grand lvmght has bee.n somewhat disappointing. He will be a runner in the Telegraph Handicap to-mor-nnv, and he may reveal his triuy lorni and pace, in which case Grand Knight will be a source of trouble to his opponents. In the past the To Kmti Racing Club only had a single day to .face on, but this vear the club will hold a otoiiay meeting, due to a privilege granted by* fiie .Minister of Internal Affairs, .-being that the 'Wellington Trotting Club were granted the concession, it was well nigh impossible for the Minister u refuse the Waikato Club. All the same tlie procedure is a risky one for the Minister to adopt, for tinless the allocation of the pbnmts available is not made immediately all his spare time will be taken up in replying to applications for the same privilege as that granted to the clubs named. MAX AWAT 17 TROTTING MEETING. PALMERSTON N.. Jan. 17. The Manawatu Trotting Club’s annviill meeting .was held in fine, windy weather to-dav.
