POPULAR GIRL CARNIVAL
With the object- ot raising funds to assist the brigade finances a “popular girl” carnival is being conducted under the auspices oi the lvapougA- Y oluiitoc. Fire Brigade. Three candidates—Aliss M. Evans (red), Miss A. Martin (white), and Miss G. lhslop (blue), have been nominated to contest the popular verdict, and their respective supporters are evincing much ingenuity and- energy m the quest for votes. Jhc oflieial committees, who in each instance -aie being assisted by munoeis lof keen workers, arc a,s follow: Red, C Evans, U. Hawke, L. Hill, and At . Scanlon; white, Messrs. A. Melvil.e, \ Martin A. Brewer, and D. Fawcett, blue, J. Tyack, It.. Pascoe, P. Thounm.e. aiul L. Shepperd. Functions held m ftid or the led candidate include house parties and croquet afternoons at the residence of Mrs J. • Evans and Mr. and Mrs. \ E Moss, and social evenings in the parish hall and the Oddfellows’ hail. One of the most successful of this committee’s endeavours was a dance nek. in the Piverlea hall which recruited much assistance besides being hignlv enjoyable. On that occasion a wait--in or competition for a prize donated by Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Tait wa-s won by Miss FVans and Mr. Clung. A sweet stall was also conducted at Tvapouga in aid ol the “red ’ candidate, and the most recent function was a house party -at the .residence of Mr. and Mrs W. Roberts. . ... The “white” committee’s activities include socials at the Oddfellows’ ball and the parish hall, an enjoyable “at home” at-the residence of Mr. and Airs Herbert and a very successful dame at Opuuake, through all of which propress in. the furtherance of their nominee’s candidature has been achieved. A sweet stall conducted by the candidate’s representatives was also attended with much success. The “blue” committee and its "helpers lias also been exceedingly active. Opening the campaign with a. euchre party and dance at the Oddfellow s hall." this candidate’.-.; supporters have organised a series ol successful I unctions, which include house parties at the residences of Mr. and Airs. 14. J<awliitson, Air. and Airs, W. Ilislop, and Mr. and Airs. \V. Roberts, while a dance, held at Kapimi ailracted a gathering which ia said to be a record foi the carnival campaign. A concert, which is being presented by local and visiting artists al the town hall on Alonday evening should also prove very popular. While no official counting of the votes received has yet been made known, jt is anticipated that the closing of the campaign on Thursday next will find the issue very evenly contested. It was originally intended that si gala, dav and monster sports gathering should he held at Kaponga on the last- day of the carnival, but in view of the Health Department’s mandate forbidding the? attendance of children at places of public assembly, it has been decided to- postpone the sports until further notice, .The picture entertainment, at wliic-ii the result of the campaign will lie made known, will, however, be given on Thursday evening in accordance with the original plan.
