ENGLAND WINS

MATCH WITH WALES

jY carle—press association— copyright. LONDON, Jan. 17. The England Dug by fifteen beat Wales by 12 points to 6 at Twickenham to-day. " The ground was on the soft side. Thirty-five thousand persons were present, including the Prince of Wales, who was accorded a wonderful ovation. He shook hands with the members of the teams. \.t the outset the Welshmen pressed the attack and kept play entirely in the home quarters. After twelve minutes England reached Welsh territory for the first time, and Armstrong kicked a penalty goal for England Wales resumed the assault, which was kept up fiercely for a quarter of an hour, and at last ’was rewarded. The ball came to Evan Williams, and he passed to Thomas, who, although tackled, forced liis way over. Parker failed to convert and the scores were even.

The Welsh backs got the ball oftener than their opponents. Near half-time Hainilton-Wickes secured the ball, raced to midfield, and transferred to Kittermaster, who finished a great run by scoring a try.' Armstrong’s kick failed, and the half-time score was : England 6, Wales 3. When play was resumed the English backs set a great movement going, and the ball went out to Voyce, who scored. Armstrong again missed a goal. The passing of the Welsh backs was several times faulty, and the tendency to kick was too pronounced, but England’s defence was sorely taxed. Ten minutes from the finish a movement started by Evan Williams enabled .James to get a try for Wales, and Parker had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Then a passing run by the home backs was topped off by HainiltonWickes crossing the line. He took the Wok himself, but.the ball hit the post. Wales pressed hard in the concluding minutes, hut England’s defence held and no-side sounded with the scores: England 12, Wales 6.
